The Need in San Diego County

Trafficking Is Happening in Our Own Community

8,830–11,773

A landmark San Diego study estimated that approximately 8,830 to 11,773 people may be affected by sex trafficking in San Diego County annually. Because trafficking is hidden and underreported, estimates should not be interpreted as a precise count. County of San Diego study reference

52 beds

A 2023 San Diego County public meeting document reported only 52 shelter beds designated for human-trafficking survivors in the county at that time. Availability and eligibility can change, but the documented disparity illustrates the continuing need for safe housing. San Diego County CYF Council packet

14–17 years old

The San Diego County District Attorney reports that the average age at which local sex-trafficking victims first become victimized is 14 to 17, and that victims come from every area of the county. The DA also warns families about online exploitation and recommends ongoing internet-safety conversations. San Diego County District Attorney

The availability of beds for human trafficking survivors in San Diego is severely limited compared to the estimated number of victims. Research and reports indicate the following:

  • It is estimated that there are Between 3,000 and 8,000 human trafficking victims annually n San Diego.

  • There are fewer than 100 dedicated beds available specifically for trafficking survivors in the entire county.

  • Children as young as 8 years old are actively being recruited via gaming and social media sites.
